Introvert Whisperer / 5 Strategies to Help you Adapt - Introvert Whisperer 5 Strategies to Help you Adapt As an introvert leader, you’ve probably already started seeing how your own behavior might not serve to help you succeed…or at least not at a rate you would like.   You can see others who are getting ahead and you don’t see yourself doing some of the things they are doing. In fact, you really kind of detest what you see others doing to get ahead and your principles simply won’t let you follow their example. Does this sound like you?   This leaves you pondering what you can do as you don’t see any role models. I’m not advocating that you consider a personality transplant.   It wouldn’t work anyway.   What I am proposing is adapting your behavior not all the time but in very specific situations. Adapting is simply a conscious effort by you to deliberately modify your behavior to meet both your goals and to satisfy the situation you are in.   Think of adapting your behavior as the equivalent to the difference in how you behave with a child you know versus your boss.   The person and the situations call for different behaviors â€" in that moment. Here are some things you may be doing that call for a different approach:   #1 You hunker down.    The good news is your like to get down to business and will produce like crazy.   The bad news is you do that at the expense of building relationships. Do this instead:   Take a walk-around break.   Pick a time each day to deliberately stop what you’re doing and go interact with others. #2 You don’t inject your opinion.    The good news is you listen and pay attention to what’s being said.   The bad news is, if people don’t hear something from you, they’ll just assume you don’t care or really have nothing to add. Do this instead: Make a point to offer up your ideas or opinions in every meeting or discussion you are in.   It may be hard at first, but the more you do it the easier it will become. #3 You don’t self-promote.   The good news is you aren’t being obnoxious like some other folks you probably know. (And while they are being obnoxious don’t fool yourself into thinking that is always effective).   The bad news is that you aren’t paying attention to those that are self-promoting in a quiet, subtle way. Do this instead: Figure out who the key decision makers are and what’s important to them.   Then, deliver like crazy to their priorities and keep them updated along the way.   It helps to reinforce that you not only paid attention but you delivered. #4 You don’t communicate with the boss.   There is no good news if you’re waiting for the boss to speak to you or give you their direction.   You have to be responsible for communication and not wait until they come speak to you. Do this instead.   Set up time to routinely speak to your boss.   Update them on your work.   Seek input on what’s ahead.   Ask how they view your performance and expectations of you.   Take responsibility for the relationship. #5 Don’t take everything at first glance.   The good news is you listen.   The bad news is that with some people you fail to realize they are thinking out loud.   What you hear may be simply part of the process and not a conclusion. Do this instead:   Learn to realize that for some people, you may have to ask, “where they landed” on certain topics.   What you heard might not be where or what they have concluded.   Learn to ask questions. There are certainly many other situations where your behavior could stand some modifications in order to further your agenda.   Hopefully, this will get you thinking about what and when you need to adapt. Introvert Whisperer / Introvert Holiday Nightmare Going To a Party and Networking - Introvert Whisperer Introvert Holiday Nightmare: Going To a Party and Networking If you’re like me, there is a turmoil that churns inside you as the holidays draw near.   You do want to be wanted and a party invitation is certainly a sign that someone finds you desirable to be around.   On the other hand, you regret agreeing to go shortly after you responded.   It tends to only get worse as the day draws near. What sounded like a good idea a few weeks ago sounds like a bad idea now.   It’s how we roll. Despite the various arguments your mind wages on going or not going, let me share with you a few of things I’ve learned to take the dread out of it for you. - Focus on a strategy â€" Yes, it sounds strange to think of a party like a strategy but there is some introvert goodness in doing this.   Part of the dread of going to a party is the energy consumption of meeting new people and talking (or listening).   It’s too easy to allow yourself to sit and listen endlessly for hours.   Some of that are ok but too much is a soul sucking.   I have found a good strategy is to focus on 1 or may be 2 people at a time and to stay focused on them for a while.   Introverts prefer relationships one-on-one, so go with what you do best.       Another part of my strategy is to try to meet a couple of new people and get to know them more than the usual superficial party level.   The good thing about focusing on a strategy is that it replaces the voice in your head telling you to stay home. - Find one thing to look forward to â€" If you give it some thought, you can find a few high points to going to the party.   You might think of more.   Perhaps its getting to see someone you don’t see too often and this will allow you some catch-up time.   If that isn’t it, it could be the opportunity to wear something special or the location.   We once went to the party that was held before a musical.   I knew we wouldn’t know anyone that would be there, but I was looking forward to the stage event.   When you have something positive to think about, use that to replace your negative party-talk. - Set boundaries â€" If you have to, you could decide to go but only for a specific amount of time.   That way, you aren’t a flaky “no-show” to the host and you can go with the knowledge that you have a cutoff point.   Another tactic is to set boundaries on people who talk too much.   We are great listeners but when you’re around someone who talks too much and cares too little about your life because they are only talking about them, it stops being fun. Know your limits and disengage. - Volunteer â€" Call your host and see if you can help them with setting up the party or running to get supplies.   You’ll be appreciated and also feel a greater investment in the event. - Define your attitude â€" You can choose to think about going to a party however you want.   Look at the party as an opportunity to meet a new friend or tighten relationships with people you already know.   Make a choice to not be a party pooper â€" before the party.   There must be some good reason someone thought enough of you to invite you to their event.   Capture that good spirit and use it. I think it’s important to participate in the things people invite you to.   I know not all of my fellow “innies” shares that perspective.   But, in my mind it goes something like this:   If you turn someone down enough or are a no-show, they will stop asking.   It becomes a signal that you don’t want to nurture the relationship.   For me, if they are in my life to begin with, I do care and I want this person to know. Guitar teacher  Sean L.  shares some helpful hints on preparing for your guitar teacher to come to your home to teach Preparing for your guitar lessons is just as important as the lesson itself, and having an  adequate in-home lesson space is an integral part of preparing for your private instruction.  Without a proper space your lessons will suffer, and you will not get the most out of your money. Here are three things to think about to better prepare the  perfect base of operations for you and your teacher to share. 1. Find Your Space Finding that perfect place to hold your lessons can sometimes be overwhelming task; there are  many factors that come into play when looking for somewhere that best fits your needs. The  three most important are: 1. Noise Will this area be too loud, or will you be too loud for this area? Noises can be  distracting so avoid areas where volume would be a problem. Also, you dont want to disturb  neighbors or other people who share your living space. If noise is a problem everywhere in the  house, try to let everyone know your lesson time so they can work around it. The acoustics of  your spot should also be taken into account. This means stay away from places with an echo,  such as stairwells and wine cellars. 2. Foot Traffic You dont want your lesson to get consistently interrupted by roommates/family, so find  a place that can remain undisturbed for the entity of your lesson. I tend to use my living room,  and I let my roommates know my teaching schedule, this leaves my lessons uninterrupted. 3. Comfort There should be enough room for you and your instructor to sit comfortably, along with  fitting all of your equipment. This means closets should probably be avoided. Along with looking  for somewhere that has an adequate amount of space, try to find somewhere that is not too  humid, as places like basements tend to be harsh on strings and equipment. Once youve chosen your space, keep it neat! Nobody wants to see last weeks gym socks when they are trying to learn or teach guitar.  Aside from gym socks, you should also clean out some clutter from your chosen spot. This will  help create a more welcoming area for you and your instructor. 2. Prepare Your Equipment Think of the following questions as an equipment checklist: Do you have a music stand?  You may need one for your lessons as well as practicing. A music stand is necessary for  reading tab, chord charts, and sheet music. Most teachers will give you handouts every lesson. Is your instructor willing to bring an amp, or do you need to have a second for your  teacher?  A working amp is vital for electric guitar lessons; for yourself, and your instructor. Also make  sure your amp has distortion if that applies to your lessons. Are all your cables working?  Always makes sure all your equipment works. Cables break often so always double check How will you access backing tracks and music?  A phone, tablet, or computer with Internet access works best. You may also need a pair of  speakers, because the speakers on your device may not be sufficient. Is your guitar in good shape?  You need to check if your guitars intonation and action is correct. The intonation will affect  how in-tune your guitar sounds, and if the action is bad your guitar could be too difficult to play or there could be fret buzz. You will also need to be prepared to receive constructive criticism  during your lessons. Criticism is an important part of learning guitar. If you follow these simple steps, you and your instructor will have a much more  enjoyable time. A well prepared student leads to more productive lessons.
